ABOUT ELR
Evans Learning Resources (ELR) was founded by Dan Evans for the purpose of helping to bridge gaps in Philippine education through supplemental learning resources. These resources include the design and support of a peer tutoring program (School-Based Tutorial) in which high-performing students tutor under-performing students, and the provision of tutoring materials for that program. In addition, ELR publishes short stories for children and teens from grades one through twelve, which are especially beneficial for readers in rural and remote regions where reading materials can be difficult if not impossible to access. All ELR resources are provided at no charge to any school (public or private), teacher and student in the Philippines. They may also be used for adult literacy programs.
ABOUT DAN EVANS
Dan Evans is a permanent resident of the Philippines, having relocated from the United States in January, 2007 to serve as an independent Christian missionary, and founded Datu Wali Mission. He and his wife, Aurea, live and work in the province of Sarangani and focus on improving access to education by indigent and indigenous children, improving the nutrition of children in their area, intervening in health crises, and providing Biblical instruction and counseling. It was Dan’s contributions to education in his area (among them: creating mini-libraries in local schools, a feeding program, and free school transportation), that attracted the attention of then governor, Migs Dominguez and Vice Governor Steve Solon. When Solon was elected Governor of Sarangani in 2013, he asked Dan to serve as his education consultant. Together, they formed the Governor’s Commission on Education (GCE), which Dan chaired for all three of Solon’s terms.
Among GCE achievements, was Dan’s proposal to the Sarangani Division of the Department of Education, to pilot a peer tutoring program (officially called: School-Based Tutorial) to address poor reading performance by Sarangani students. He developed framewoork guidelines for the program plus a set of instructional aids for volunteer tutors to use in mentoring struggling students. Those materials were published and distributed by the provincial government of Sarangani, plus the Latter-day Saints Charities, an NGO that continues to support SBT and has trained division and school administrators across the Philippines. Schools that have implemented SBT, report a 40-85% reduction in students struggling with reading.
The ELR website contains downloadable resources for School-Based Tutorial, including READING and NUMERACY tutoring aids, a book detailing how to implement SBT, and a video about that program. ELR also provides a growing list of original short stories in the context of Filipino life that can help children practice their reading, expand their vocabulary and test their comprehension. All ELR resources are available and can be downloaded directly from the ELR website without cost to any Philippine school or teacher. They may be printed, copied and distributed as long as copyright statements are not obscured and content is not modified. All ELR materials are copyrighted by Daniel L. Evans and may NOT be sold under any circumstances.
